China's Yuan Yue defeated compatriot Zheng Qinwen 6-4, 6-3 in the second round to advance at the WTA Indian Wells event on Saturday.
Yuan has recently claimed her first WTA tour title in Austin after defeating fellow Chinese Wang Xiyu in the final.
In the men's draw, China's Zhang Zhizhen fought hard but was eventually eliminated by Luca Nardi of Italy 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
